Overview of Our Hands-on Screenwriting Workshops

As any successful screenwriter will tell you, screenwriting takes work. To get good at screenwriting, the best thing you can possibly do is to simply write, a lot. Practice truly makes perfect in the world of screenwriting, especially practice overseen by a faculty of professional screenwriters. At New York Film Academy South Beach’s Screenwriting Workshops, students get the opportunity to do just this in a hands-on, constructive environment where they learn the fundamentals of screenplays while learning the best professional writing practices that they can utilize upon completing a writer’s workshop.

Screenwriting is an art form that requires not only an understanding of story, format, and screenplay structures, but also a knowledge of what makes good screenplays great. Students study under our faculty of professional screenwriters and filmmakers who are working industry screenwriters. These professionals provide insights into the current trends and challenges facing the aspiring script writer.

All of the workshops at the top screenwriting school, the 8-Week and 12-Week Evening Screenwriting Workshops, immerse students in the study and practice of script writing. Students receive constructive criticism and feedback from both their instructors and fellow students, allowing students to collaborate with one another in pursuit of bringing their story ideas to life. On top of working on numerous scripts and writing projects, students in the screenwriting course have the chance to develop a feature-length screenplay that is between 90 and 120 pages in length. Eight-Week Screenwriting Workshop Overview

Combining lecture and seminars with faculty-supervised workshops, the eight-week writing program teaches students the fundamentals and craft of screenwriting while providing a supportive and intensive environment in which students learn how to establish a productive and effective working practice for themselves.

In addition to gaining knowledge and direct experience with screenwriting, students also learn the process of revision, how to write dialogue, classic screenplay structure, and WGA format. Students learn the many different elements that make up a well-written screenplay including how to construct character arcs, establish particular themes and conflicts, and write compelling flashback sequences.

Over the course of the eight weeks, students focus on two particular areas of study: Elements of Screenwriting and Writing the Feature Screenplay. Elements of Screenwriting introduces students to the art of screenwriting through lectures, in-class exercises, outside readings, classroom discussions, and film viewings. At the core of the course, students will learn how to write scene descriptions, describe characters and locations, develop action sequences, as well as gain extensive experience in screenplay formatting.

Writing the Feature Screenplay is an intensive and fast-paced workshop that exposes students to the foundations of screenwriting, which students learn through a series of in-class creative writing exercises. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a first draft of a feature-length screenplay. Through learning how to complete this formidable task in a constructive setting, the workshop equips students with the know-how and skillset to realize their own professional goals as screenwriters.

Twelve-Week Evening Screenwriting Workshop Overview

Designed for students who wish to study and practice screenwriting in a supportive and challenging environment, but are unable to make a full-time commitment, the Twelve-Week Evening Screenwriting Workshop at New York Film Academy South Beach provides students with the opportunity to study the craft of screenwriting while balancing other responsibilities.

Similar in structure and scope as the eight-week workshop, the twelve-week workshop focuses on essential writing concepts and techniques. In addition to the all-important concepts of good visual storytelling, topics also include classic screenplay structure and format. Faculty members also cover a wide range of crucial screenwriting elements such as conflict, dialogue, voiceovers, and much more. Students should be prepared to reserve time on the weekends to work on their scripts and course assignments.

In addition to the above topics, students will participate in a series of lectures, in-class exercises, and film viewings to expand their understanding of screenwriting. Students also participate in a faculty-supervised Screenwriting Workshop in which they learn the foundational elements of screenwriting through a series of in-class writing exercises, individual writing assignments, reading their screenplays to their fellow students, and workshop discussions. Students apply what they have learned in their classes to the creation of a first draft of a feature-length screenplay to be completed by the end of the twelve-week workshop.
